Dependent Visa
The Dependent Stay visa is a residence status for the spouse, children, or adopted children of foreign nationals in Japan who hold residence statuses such as those for employment or study (excluding certain statuses like Specified Skilled Worker Type 1 or Technical Intern Training). This visa allows family members to live in Japan under the same residence status as the primary visa holder.
Typically, it is assumed that the spouse will live together with the primary visa holder, and the family member must be financially supported. It is important to have the financial means to support the family, and if there are dependents in the home country, this will also be considered. For example, if you, as the primary visa holder, have a child born in your home country, your child will need to apply for the Dependent visa to enter and live in Japan.
With a Dependent Visa, individuals can apply for permission to engage in activities outside of their status (shikakugai-katsudo), which allows them to work under certain restrictions, even in simple labor.
The application for this visa requires various documents, especially those that prove the relationship between the applicant and the sponsor (such as a marriage certificate, birth certificate) and documents verifying the sponsor’s occupation and income. Additionally, the sponsor’s tax payment history will be reviewed.
