Permanent Residency (PR/Eijyuken)

For foreign nationals who have lived in Japan for a certain period, obtaining permanent residency is an option worth considering. Many foreigners living in Japan face difficulties when applying for housing loans despite residing in the country for years. Or, you may feel you want to stay and work in Japan without the limitation on the number of years as well as the kinds of activities in Japan.  In such cases, many consider applying for a permanent resident visa.

Acquiring permanent residency expands job opportunities and eliminates the need for visa renewals (although renewal of the residence card is still required). However, because of these benefits, the requirements for obtaining permanent residency are strict. If you are considering applying, we recommend consulting with our company first. While a detailed evaluation will be conducted during the consultation, here are some key requirements:

Key Requirements for Permanent Residency:

  • Continuous Residence in Japan:
You must have lived in Japan for at least 10 consecutive years, with the last 5 years under a work-related or status-based visa (some exceptions apply).
  • Stable Income:
If applying under a work visa, an annual income of at least 3 million yen is generally recommended. However, factors such as household income, savings, and assets may also be considered. The number of dependents may impact eligibility, as stricter financial requirements may apply for larger families. The authorities will review your income records for the past 5 years.
  • Legal Compliance:
Your history of abiding by Japanese laws will be reviewed, including any past criminal records, imprisonment, fines, or traffic law violations.
  • Public Duties:
You must have properly paid taxes, pension contributions, and health insurance.

Special Cases:

If you are married to a Japanese national or a permanent resident, the requirements for permanent residency are significantly relaxed. For more details, please consult with our company.
